10 things you didn't know about the Tata Nano Car

You've heard of the Nano from Tata Motors, right? Produced in India and primarily for the Indian market, it is to be one of the smallest and cheapest cars in the world. In case you're not up to speed on this one, take a look at our 10 fun facts about it, below.

10 things you didn't know about the Tata Nano

#1 It is the cheapest production car in the world

In producing the Nano, Tata Motors set out to produce the cheapest production car in the world, and with a base price of approximately US$2000, it looks like they've done it.

#2 It has really, really tiny wheels

The wheels on the Tata Nano measure a tiny 11.8 inches, making them look similar to large dinner plates.

#3 It is held together with glue

In order to keep production costs to an absolute minimum and achieve that ultra-low sticker price, Tata Motors glued rather than welded some of the exterior components.

#4 Calling it a 'hatchback' is a bit of a stretch

The Tata Nano is billed as a hatchback, but in fact that is a bit of a misnomer, because the back doesn't open, meaning it's not really a 'hatch' at all! The boot space, such as it is, is instead accessed by folding down the rear seats, another 'feature' chosen to keep costs down. If you can get to it, the boot space has a capacity of 130 liters, so you should be able to fit your shopping or a couple of small suitcases.

#5 Getting a speeding ticket won't be a problem

The Tata Motors Nano boasts a two-cylinder engine producing just 32 brake horsepower. This gives it a theoretical top speed of 75 miles per hour. Whether it's really able to achieve this without going down a very steep hill, frankly, we doubt.

#6 You won't get distracted by the sound system

Not only does the Tata Nano not come with a CD player as standard...it doesn't even come with a radio. So it's B.Y.O. tunes – maybe an iPod and headphones? Your passengers will need their own.

#7 You might actually survive a crash in one

Despite looking a bit like a tin can on wheels, the Nano does in fact boast seat belts and crumple zones. Exactly where those crumple zones are located remains a mystery.

#8 You won't even need a dime to turn on

This is impressive: the Nano has a turning circle of just eight metres. You'll never have to execute a three-point turn in heavy traffic again!

#9 When you get when you're going, you can pick it up and put it in your pocket.

Well, to be serious, maybe that is a little bit of an exaggeration. But, at only 122 inches long, the Tata Nano is seriously little. Given that parking spaces are generally around 240 inches long, you should never get boxed in again! Well, providing there are marked parking spaces were you are. We're not sure how common they are in India.

#10 It might be hard to get one

Because of its low, low price, this is set to be a very popular car in India, so popular that Tata Motors has been inundated with orders, and will struggle to make enough (at least initially) to satisfy demand.
