Top 10 things you could buy instead of a Tata Nano Car with the same money:

Small? Yes. Cheap? Yes. One of the most successful cars ever? Time will tell! The Nano from Tata Motors is big news. Made in India for the Indian market, the intention is to bring cars to the masses in India who previously couldn't afford one.

So just how cheap is the Tata Nano? At 100,000 rupees for the basic model, it is the equivalent of about US$2,000. To give you an idea of how much that is, we bring you our Top 10 list other things you could buy with that much money instead of the Nano.

#1 At least three iPhones

Following on from the hugely popular iPod range, the iPhone Apple is surely the most coveted tech gadget of recent years. Because it is so popular, the price varies a little, but we're sure you could get at least three of them for 2,000 bills. Ok, you can't pick up your groceries with an iPhone like you can with a Tata Nano, but you can go online and order them instead! Food for thought.

#2 9,266 eggs

Eggs are tasty, versatile, and a good source of protein for adults and children alike. And for one Tata Nano, you could have 9,266 of them. Probably you wouldn't want to buy them all at once though, as they would go bad.

#3 800 cafe lattes

Coffee is such a pleasant treat. Buying it every day can get expensive though. If you stopped buying one a day, you could probably afford a Tato Nano in under three years! Or you could just get the coffees and walk everywhere.

#4 Many, many shares in a financial company

While you could get lots and lots of shares in, for example, AIG for your $2,000, we don't think you should. Go for the car, it will hold its value a lot better.

#5 Three decent motorcycles

This is a real issue for Tata Motors. Cheap as their Nano is, an Indian family could buy three decent-size motorcycles for the same amount of rupees. In a poor country, that may prove still a more attractive option, despite the convenience that a four-door car brings to the table.

#6 285 movie tickets

Movies are great, aren't they? Two hours in another world, and they're pretty cheap too. Transport is important, but so is entertainment!

#7 4878 postage stamps

Wow, that's a lot of letters! But you could just use email, which is free, and buy a Tata Nano anyway. A much better option.

#8 778 Big Macs

In a country like India, if you are poor, you don't always know where your next meal is coming from. Not buying a Tata Nano would mean 778 days of getting a decent meal at McDonald's, and probably a lot more days if you're buying street food and not multinational food.

#9 In India, two cows

Cows make milk, and milk is a great food source. We're not sure if you can eat cows in India, and we think probably not, but surely milk is a good enough reason to own a cow. And in a pinch, you can even ride it! It wouldn't be as fast as a Nano from Tata Motors though.

#10 We can't think of a number 10!

At just 100,000 rupees or US$2,000, the Tata Nano really is excellent value. Don't spend the money on anything else!
